Th...I love The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes, Gene. That it veers into horror territory, in my opinion far more successfully than Fox's Hound Of The Baskervilles, from the same year, is a huge advantage over the earlier film, which I find disappointing.

Yes, the South American killer and the instrument he plays is highly effective. He's the Rondo Hatton character, more or less. Also, in his identification with a musical theme he reminds me a bit of Bela Lugosi's Ygor in the same year's Son Of Frankenstein. Both characters have a larger than life strangeness odd for the films they appear in.

George Zucco's Moriarty is for me the most frightening, truly menacing portrayal of that character I'd seen till Eric Porter came along for the Granada TV series.

It's a pity this was the last truly Victorian London film for the Rathbone and Bruce Holmes and Watson series. john kenrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00710666533854296630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-460474552118769771.post-84409925161173406342012-03-22T15:29:52.826-07:002012-03-22T15:29:52.826-07:00Hadn't heard of the Russian version, but I'...Hadn't heard of the Russian version, but I'll keep an eye out, thanks.Gene Phillipshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11495562795211277146noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-460474552118769771.post-8930897610792905982012-03-21T21:46:59.215-07:002012-03-21T21:46:59.215-07:00Rathbone is a great Holmes!
But for the bumbling ...Rathbone is a great Holmes!

But for the bumbling Watson he is forced to team up with, he would have been the Definitive Holmes...

Have you tried the Russian adaptation with Vasily Livanov as Sherlock Holmes.

Cheers!Arunhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16498276962097853996noreply@blogger.com
